Before a waterproofing
system is applied a thorough inspection of the substrate
(surface to be waterproofed) must be conducted. The
contractor must ensure that the surface is smooth dry
and free of any contaminants like grease, mould etc.
The type of substrate
plays an important role in choosing the correct
waterproofing system. Waterproofing contractors must be
keenly aware of the different substrates and how they
impact on a waterproofing system, e.g. a rib and block
slab requires a product that will easily adjust to the
variable movement on the concrete deck and at the same
time provide a lasting waterproofing solution to the
client. Depending on the waterproofing application the
use of primers from the relevant waterproofing
manufacturer will prepare the surface to receive the
waterproofing system. Primers primarily assist in
settling dust and facilitate the adhesion of the
waterproofing system.
Many applications require that an
adequate fall (substrate at angle to allow water runoff)
exist on the substrate. Often problems can arise if the
falls are inadequate or of a low pitch. If falls are
inadequate the waterproofing contractor may recommend
either creating proper falls or applying a tanking
solution which normally comprises of a double layer
waterproofing system. Anker Projects experience has made
