The number of waterproofing materials available to the
home owner and building contractor have steadily
increased over the years, making the task of choosing
the best product for a particular waterproofing or
roofing problem all the more difficult to make. These
products range from torch on membranes and self adhesive
membranes to acrylic waterproofing systems, polyurea and
polyurethane sealants. One of the more popular
waterproofing products in South Africa remains the torch
on membrane.
Torch on membranes
These
waterproofing membranes consist primarily of bitumen
modified with APP and ATACTIC ingredients. An important
part of the membrane is the reinforcement sandwiched in
the centre which gives the waterproofing membrane its dimensional
stability. Different brands of torch on membranes are
available, but few possess the stability to operate
optimally in African climates. Anker Projects is aware
of this important distinction and has therefore aligned
itself with manufactures that provide torch on
waterproofing systems suited for local climatic
conditions..
Self Adhesive Membranes
Self adhesive membranes are well known for their
elasticity and flexibility. These waterproofing
membranes consist of SBS modified bitumen, which gives
it its flexibility and elongation properties. Unlike APP
modified bitumen membranes they are not resistant to
ultra violet rays of the sun. Self adhesive bitumen
waterproofing membranes are largely used in covered
situations or protected from the harmful rays of the
sun. Most self adhesive waterproofing membranes require
a primer to be applied on the surface before its
application, this serves to settle the dust facilitate
adhesion of the product to the substrate. Anker projects
have proven expertise in the application of self
adhesive waterproofing membranes in covered situations
in the Cape Town waterproofing and roofing industry.
Acrylic Waterproofing
Acrylic waterproofing systems are strictly speaking
waterproofing compounds that have a water base. They are often
mixed with other materials like paint, cement or bitumen. These
waterproofing systems are typically easy to apply either by
spray gun, roller or paint brush. The acrylic waterproofing
system affords excellent waterproofing capabilities if applied
according to manufactures instructions. Anker projects have
completed many projects successfully that have required the use
of acrylic waterproofing systems. Again the use of acrylic
waterproofing systems must take into account many factors like
the substrate, movement and more.
