Concrete
roofs can provide a relatively maintenance free roofing
system that can withstand the most exacting weather
conditions nature has to offer. The waterproofing of
concrete roofs can result in dry buildings in excess of
30 years if done correctly. The typical applications of
a torch on membrane on concrete roofs are common place
in South Africa.
Types of Concrete Roofs
A
Concrete
roofs can consist of pre-cast concrete slabs or in situ
concrete slabs. The pre-cast concrete slabs or rib and
block slabs experience more variable movement across the
length of the substrate as compared to in situ concrete
slabs. The waterproofing contractor must take extra care
in choosing the right product for concrete roofs. Torch
on membranes are the most popular roofing system for
concrete roofs. Cementicious waterproofing systems have
also been used on concrete roofs. Caution must be
exercised to use cementitious waterproofing systems on
smaller concrete areas.
Applying a "torch on" membrane to a
concrete roof
The concrete
roof is primed with a bitumen primer to settle dust and
facilitate adhesion upon which a 4mm or 5mm torch on
membrane is applied using a gas flamed torch. The
waterproofing contractor makes provision for overlaps
and flashings on a roofing system like this. The final
application of bitumen aluminium paint in two coats
occurs once the membrane has sufficiently weathered.
