Often the
life cycle of a waterproofing membrane or roof is
reached or the system fails due to various
problems
with the substrates or application. When this
happens a new waterproofing system needs to be applied
to continue protection from moisture ingress.
Re-waterproofing a substrate has its fair share of
difficulties, among these are having to remove tiles and
screeds in order to apply another waterproofing
solution. Waterproofing that is exposed poses less
hassle in being replaced than waterproofing in covered
situations. In re-roofing a roof repair can easily be
affected if the condition of the roof is not severely
compromised. Where serious damage to roofing is present
the roofing sheets must be replaced to restore the roofs
functionality.
New Waterproofing on existing
buildings
Clients
often ask whether a waterproofing contractor can apply
something over the existing membrane or over the
existing tiles in the case of a balcony. Many factors
prevent this from happening e.g. a waterproofing
contractor will rather not apply a waterproofing product
over an existing waterproofing product because he is
essentially applying a solution on a failed system. He
would prefer removing the old waterproofing and applying
his product on a suitable substrate, thus making him
responsible for his guarantee. Applying waterproofing
over tiles on a balcony if a failed system is already in
place below it can be disastrous since the contractor
can trap latent water between waterproofing systems.
This can cause structural damage to substrates.
Waterproofing contractors on the whole prefer to go back
to the underlying substrate and waterproof at that
level.
Flood Testing Waterproofing
Flood
testing is a method used by waterproofing contractors to
check if the system has been applied properly and that
there are no defects. This is particularly helpful to
clients who want to be assured that their leaking roof
or balcony has been properly repaired. After
re-waterproofing a client may insist on a flood test to
give them extra peace of mind.
